During Glass Silk Screen Printing, How to Avoid Pinholes?

During glass processing, silk screen print is one of the key stage. The designated patterns applied by skilled printers. The process can be carried out either manually or machines. One of the most persistent issues facing during printing process is the occurence of pinholes: Tiny, unwanted voids in the printed design. For these working in glass screen printing, the defect is particularly troublesome. So what steps can be taken to avoid it? Below are practical measures to minimize pinhole formation.

First: check dust and foreign matter on the screen
During strencil preparation, residues from water-based development may remain and dust particles can also become trapped during emulsion coating. If these contaminants not being removed, they can block parts of the mesh resulting in pinholes in the final print. To prevent this, the screen should be carefully inspected before production begins, and any debris should be cleared away promptly. Regular checks allow for timely repairs and significantly reduce the risk of pinholes.

Second: Ensure Thorough Cleaning The Glass Surface
Before printing, the glass panel must be properly pre-treated to remove grease, dirt and airborne particles. Once clean done, it should be printed immediately. Otherwise it risks re-contamination from the surrounding environment. A particularly important point to note is that touch the printing surface with bare hands can leave fingerprints. They may later manifest as pinholes. Therefore, handling should be minimized or done with protective gloves.

Third. Clean the Substrate Surface Effectively
Whenever the substrate is aluminum, glass or acrylic, it should undergo surface treatment and then be printed without delay. In multi color layers, it's common practice to wipe the surface with alcohol just prior to print to ensure it's free from any residual contaminants. For more thorough cleaning, simi automatic or full automatic ultrasonic cleaning equipment can also be applied. Such pre-treatment not only removes oily residues but also eliminates fine dust that could otherwise compromise print quality.
