Aluminosilicate Glass vs. Soda-Lime Glass & Chemical Strengthening Guide for Touch Screens
Oct 07, 2026
1. Glass Substrates: Aluminosilicate Glass vs. Soda-Lime Glass
Choosing the correct base glass is the first step in custom cover glass design. The two most common materials used in display manufacturing are Soda-Lime Glass and Aluminosilicate Glass.
| Feature / Property | Soda-Lime Glass (Standard Glass) | Aluminosilicate Glass (High-Alumina Glass) |
| Chemical Composition | SiO2 (~70%), Na2O}(~15%), CaO (~10%) | SiO2 (~60%), Al2O3 (~15–20%), Na2O |
| Mechanical Strength | Moderate flexural and impact strength | High flexural strength, superior scratch/impact resistance |
| Chemical Ion Exchange Efficiency | Moderate (smaller ionic radius depth) | Exceptional (higher capacity for K+ ion substitution) |
| Bending/Curvature Capability | Suitable for flat or simple 2.5D shapes | Ideal for complex 2.5D/3D curved display covers |
| Typical Drop Test Resistance | Standard performance | Up to 3–5× stronger than soda-lime after chemical tempering |
| Primary Applications | Smart home appliances, standard touch panels, digital signage | Automotive displays, rugged industrial HMIs, premium mobile/tablet screens |
Why Choose Aluminosilicate Glass?
Aluminosilicate glass contains a higher concentration of alumina Al2O3, which replaces part of the silica matrix. This chemical structure provides:
Deeper Potassium Ion Diffusion: Allows deeper ion exchange during chemical strengthening.
Superior Scratch Resistance: Higher surface hardness prevents micro-fractures over long-term use.
Thinner Profile with Equal Strength: Enables ultra-thin cover glass designs (e.g., 0.5mm–1.1mm) without sacrificing mechanical safety.
2. Chemical Strengthening (Chemical Tempering) Explained
Unlike physical thermal tempering-which cools glass rapidly using cold air blasts and is unsuitable for thin glass<3mm-chemical strengthening relies on a low-temperature molten salt ion exchange process.
The Ion-Exchange Mechanism
Molten Salt Bath Immersion: The processed glass cover is immersed in a high-purity Potassium Nitrate KNO3 bath heated to approximately 400C - 450C.
Ion Substitution: Larger Potassium ions (K+) from the salt bath substitute the smaller Sodium ions (Na+) present near the glass surface layer.
Wedge Effect: Because K+ ions occupy a larger atomic volume than Na+ ions, they create high residual compression forces on the glass surface layer as it cools down, dramatically increasing structural resistance.
3. Key Parameters of Chemically Strengthened Glass: CS & DOL
To evaluate and control the mechanical quality of chemically strengthened cover glass, two critical parameters are measured using specialized optical stress meters (FSM):
1. Compressive Stress (CS)
Definition: The surface compression force induced by the ion exchange, measured in Megapascals (MPa).
Function: Prevents micro-cracks on the surface from expanding into catastrophic failures.
Typical Range:
Soda-Lime Glass: 450MPa 650MPa
Aluminosilicate Glass: 700MPa - 950MPa+
2. Depth of Layer (DOL)
Definition: The thickness/depth of the surface compressive stress zone, measured in micrometers.
Function: Determines how deep a scratch or sharp impact can penetrate before reaching the inner tensile tension zone.
Typical Range:
Soda-Lime Glass:8um-15um
Aluminosilicate Glass: 35um- 50um(Double/Double-stage strengthening can achieve even higher DOL)
4. Selecting the Right Substrate & Strengthening for Your Project
When designing custom glass covers for display modules, consider the following selection criteria:
Automotive Displays (IATF 16949 Standards):
Recommended Substrate: Aluminosilicate Glass
Strengthening Target: $CS > 750MPaDOL> 40m
Reasoning: Pass head-impact/ball-drop safety standards and withstand severe thermal shocks.
Industrial Control & Outdoor Terminals:
Recommended Substrate: High-Strength Soda-Lime or Aluminosilicate Glass 1.1mm - 3.0mm thickness)
Strengthening Target: High DOL to resist heavy mechanical vibrations, tool impacts, and harsh environment handling.
Smart Home Appliances & Touch Panels:
Recommended Substrate: Soda-Lime Glass
Strengthening Target: Standard Chemical Tempering (CS > 500 MPa)
Reasoning: Cost-effective solution delivering clean aesthetics and sufficient daily durability.
