Cover Glass Weekly: Corning Banks On Optics As Auto & PC Demand Tightens
Apr 02, 2026
Corning Inc. (GLW) kicked off 2026 with a clear strategy: move beyond drop tests. The glass maker grabbed two CES Innovation Honors for surface treatments, signaling that the next battle in cover glass is optical quality, not just mechanical strength.
The winners:
Gorilla Glass Matte Pro: Targets the premium laptop/tablet space (Acer Swift Edge 14 AI is first). Focus is on reducing glare for outdoor/high-brightness use.
SurfaceIQ: An anti-reflective treatment for the surge in automotive "smart surfaces." Addresses reflection issues in vehicle cockpits.
Why it matters:
The smartphone market is saturated, but ASPs are rising due to foldables and AI hardware. Meanwhile, automotive displays are becoming the new consumer electronics battleground. AGC also used CES to push its "Smoke Coating" for seamless instrument panels, proving the industry is racing to make glass disappear visually.
Supply chain check:
Tariffs remain a headache. With Corning shifting more production to Kentucky for Apple, and Chinese makers (Lens, Biel) guarding their own backyard, expect regional pricing to diverge in Q2.
Verdict: Durability is table stakes. Anti-glare and anti-fingerprint (oleophobic) tech are now the true value drivers for 2026 orders.
