Product Introduction
New Trends - Hot Bent Glass for Automotive Display
how GL produce a piece of hot bent glass for automotive display?
As a specialized glass OEM, GL approach to produce 3D hot bent glass for automotive displays focuses on balancing complex geometries with extreme durability required for the cabin environment. The practical look process flow below:
1.Cutting & Edge preparation
Float glass cut to size with CNC edge ground to specification to reduce stress points.
2.Cleaning & Inspection
Multi stage washing removes particles and residues, 100% visual check ensure surface integrity before bending.
3.Masking & Coating(Optional)
To select masking apply if decorative prints or functional coatings required, ceramic frit prints for anti reflective or hiding purpose.
4.Hot Bending
Load into curve molds, heat in bending furnace to 620~650°C till pliable, gravity and mold shape define curvature, control cooling avoids distortion.
5.Thermally / Chemically strengthening
Rapid air quenching increases mechanical strength and thermal resistance, parameters tuned to maintain optical clarity.
6.Post process treatments
Optical anti‑fingerprint, anti‑glare, or anti‑reflective coatings applied; precision trimming or drilling completed as needed.
7.Final QC & Packaging
Dimensional, curvature, optical, and durability tests performed; packed with interlayers to prevent surface damage during transport.

Processing Options
Available Processes:
Optional Processes – Pick what fits your job
| Process | What it does | When to choose it | Cost & time impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anti-glare (AG) coating | Cuts reflection, helps outdoor readability | Dashboard or co-driver screens near windows | Adds 1-2 days. Mid-range cost. |
| Anti-fingerprint (AF) coating | Repels oil, easier to clean | Touchscreens that actually get touched | Adds 1 day. Low to mid cost. |
| Anti-reflective (AR) coating | Multi-layer optical coating for max transmission | High-end displays, night mode sensitive | Adds 2–3 days. High cost. |
| Black silk printing | Border masking, hides adhesive or wiring | Almost all automotive displays | No extra time if done before bending. Ceramic ink required. |
| Polished edges | Smooth, glossy edge finish | Exposed glass edges (not covered by bezel) | Adds 1 day. Medium cost. |
| Seamed edges | Broken sharp corners, not fully polished | Edges hidden inside the display assembly | No extra time. Low cost. |
| Hole drilling | Cutouts for sensors, buttons, or cameras | Displays with ambient light sensors or physical controls | Adds 1 day. Tooling cost per hole size. |
| Notch cutting | U‑shape or C‑shape cutout from edge | Top center notch (like phones) or side clearance | Adds 1 day. We need min R0.5 mm at internal corners. |
| Chemically strengthened | Ion exchange for higher impact resistance | Thin glass under 1.0 mm, or any part that needs drop safety | Adds 1-2 days after bending. Mid cost. |
| Thermally tempered | Heat strengthening (less common for thin curved parts) | Thicker glass over 2.0 mm | Adds 1 day. Not recommended for under 1.5 mm. |

FAQ
Q:Can you add anti-glare coating after the glass is already bent?
A:Yes, but price will be higher than a piece of flat glass. Coating a curved surface takes longer because the spray heads have to move around the contour. If you can tell us before we schedule the run, we can sometimes coat during the bend cycle and save you that upcharge.
Q:What happens if my drawing calls for a radius that's too tight for the glass thickness?
A: The glass will either crack during cooling or show visible stress lines under polarized light. For 0.7 mm glass, the tightest we recommend is a 15 mm radius. For 1.1 mm, stay above 25 mm. Push it smaller and we'll warn you upfront. Some customers try it anyway. Most come back to these numbers after two failed samples.
Q:Do you charge extra for the radius map you mentioned?
A:No. That's just part of how we work. Every pallet gets a one-page sheet with five actual measurements. No line item on the invoice. We started doing it because customers kept asking for proof that the glass matched their drawing, and a certificate with "pass" written on it wasn't enough.
Q:How many sample rounds do you typically need before production?
A:Most jobs are good after two rounds. First round shows us if your radius tolerance is realistic. Second round confirms the mold adjustments. Occasionally a third round happens if you change specs mid-way-different coating, different thickness, different print color. That's on your timeline and your cost.
