The core technology of cover glass
Jun 16, 2026
The cover glass, it's technology lies in balancing hardness(scratch resistance), toughness(drop resistance) and optical clarity but remain cost effective for mass production.
1.Material & processes, the extermes performance to practical balance
To meet rising protection demands, cover glass materials and processes continue to evolve:
1.Material evolution: From soda lime and aluminosilicate to higher performance lithium aluminosilicaate(LAS) glass, plus premium microcrystalline glass and UTG for foldable screens.
2.Stengthening process: Chemical strengthening improves glass strength through ion exchange, create a compressive stress layer which resists tensile fractures. Advanced LAS glass now uses 2 steps strengthening for deeper compression and far greater drop resistance.
Sheet forming methods:
Overflow fusion: Yields superior surface quality and strength(like Corning Gorilla Glass), but at lower throughput and higher cost.
Float process: Enables high-volume, low-cost production; historically weaker in thinness and uniformity, but domestic producers are rapidly narrowing the gap.
Form & design: From flat 2D glass to contoured 2.5D and now 3D curved glass-the latter offers better ergonomics and visual appeal and now commands >70% penetration in premium smartphones.
