Corning Loses Another Automotive Design Win To AGC

Apr 04, 2026

AGC just scored a direct hit on Corning's automotive glass business. The Japanese supplier will supply Dragontrail for BMW's next-gen iDrive panel starting Q1 2027. Volume is estimated at 1.8 million units annually.

The reason is not technical. Sources say AGC undercut Corning by 19% on price. BMW originally used Gorilla Glass for the iX and i4. But procurement pushed for a second source after Corning raised prices 8% in late 2025.

AGC is not stopping there. The company just opened a dedicated automotive cover glass line in Czech Republic. Lead time to European OEMs is now 3 weeks versus Corning's 6 weeks from Kentucky.

Corning's response? A new pricing committee formed in March. But internal resistance is strong. Gorilla Glass has never been a discount product. That identity is hard to shake.

What to watch: Mercedes and VW are both up for renegotiation in Q3. If AGC wins one of those, the floodgates open.
