The UFG manufacturing challenge no one has solved yet

Apr 08, 2026

Unequal-thickness flexible glass (UFG) is the industry's next big bet for foldable displays. But turning that bet into a profitable product is proving harder than anyone expected.

What UFG promises

UTG has the same thickness everywhere. UFG is thicker in non-fold areas (100-120 microns) and thinner at the hinge (30-50 microns). Thicker glass resists point impacts. Thinner glass folds easily. Best of both worlds.

The yield problem

Current UFG production uses secondary processing. Start with uniform UTG at 50-70 microns. Mask the hinge area. Then chemically etch or mechanically polish the non-fold areas to make them thinner. This subtractive process is slow, wasteful, and expensive. Industry estimates put UFG yields below 50%. UTG yields are above 80%.
