China Invents 0.03mm Ultra-Thin Foldable Glass: Folds 100 Times A Day, Lasts 27 Years

We've all wondering how do foldable phone screens stay unbroken? Will they get creases? Do internal circuit boards snap? Chinese engineers have answered with a breakthrough: 0.03mm ultra-thin foldable glass that lasts over 27 years with 100 daily folds.

 

This isn't ordinary glass. Engineers start with a 0.2mm high-aluminum glass substrate, mount it on a spray rack, and etch it with chemical solutions. In just 10 minutes 30 seconds, it thins to 0.03mm-about half a human hair's diameter.

 

The thinned glass is highly flexible, bending without creases. Folding 100 times a day, it remains functional for over 27 years, solving a key durability concern for foldable phones.

 

Innovation extends to circuit boards too. Engineers twist 4-micron glass fibers into yarn, weave it into 13-micron electronic cloth, and combine it with epoxy resin to make a flexible, super-strong substrate-2.5 times stronger than ultra-high-strength steel, able to withstand repeated folding.

 

It also enables low-loss 5G signal transmission, ensuring stable connectivity even when the device is folded repeatedly.

 

This breakthrough addresses foldable phones' biggest pain points-durability and signal stability-setting a new industry standard and marking a leap for Chinese engineering.
