Foldables: UTG Supply Tightens As Huawei Scales Up
Apr 03, 2026
Huawei just doubled its foldable forecast for Q2 2026. That is good for UTG demand but bad for everyone waiting in line. Sources say Dowoo Insys (Samsung's main UTG partner) is now running at 94% capacity. Lead times stretched from 4 weeks to 9 weeks since January.
SCHOTT saw this coming. The German supplier locked in a separate supply deal with Huawei's display partner BOE back in December. No volume numbers yet, but insiders say SCHOTT is shipping 35-micron UTG at 1.2 million units per month. That covers roughly 40% of Huawei's need.
What about the rest? Huawei is quietly testing Tunghsu's UTG again. The two had a falling out in 2024 over yield issues. Tunghsu claims its Gen 3 line now hits 81% yield. If that holds, expect a third source by August.
Bottom line: UTG is no longer a one-supplier game. But the switch is happening slower than anyone admits.
