The Knowledge Of AG Glass

Jun 08, 2026

What's the definition of AG glass?

AG(Anti glare) glass is a kind of chemically etched to turn glass from mirror like reflection into diffuse reflection, creating a matte finish to reduces glare and eye strain under bright light.

The challenge: Sparkle

When light passes through the textured surface and interacts with LCD pixels, it creates random bright spot which called sparkle. It became the industry's biggest headache.

Latest breakthroughs(2026)

2 steps etching: Southglass developed a process first creates pits and then refines them.
Result: far less sparkle.

Better Chemistry – Yichang Southglass improved the etching solution with polyhydric alcohols and surfactants, extending bath life by 15% and boosting yield by over 11%.

Key Quality Metrics
Gloss (GU) – how shiny the surface is

Haze (%) – how much light scatters

Roughness (Ra) – texture depth

DOI (Distinctness of Image) – clarity of reflected images (now considered as important as gloss)

The Production Process (Simplified)
Nucleation – etching solution reacts with glass, forming tiny islands

Growth – islands expand and connect

Completion – full matte layer forms

Polishing – acid wash removes residue

Modern Applications
AG glass is now optically bonded directly to LCD panels using clear adhesives. This eliminates the air gap that causes internal reflections. High-end products also add anti-fingerprint coatings on top.

Quick Numbers
Transmittance target: ≥88%
